Yet another year of success
Lights in Alingsås 2010 lasted for five weeks. During these weeks, the public were invited to see six installations created by lighting designers from Great Britain, South Africa, Australia, Germany and Sweden. The installations provided an opportunity for visitors to interact with them and thus offered a playful element to the urban lighting schemes. Alongside the Lights in Alingsås workshop projects, but also worth seeing, was the seventh installation in the gardens of Christinae Church. This was part of a research project by Ulrika Wänström-Lindh, a PhD student from HDK in Gothenburg.
Many of the installations were realised using the latest technology in the form of LED fixtures and computerized control systems. Thanks to the latter, electricity consumption was carefully controlled and substantially reduced. In 2010, 430 fixtures were used on the project sites, 190 of which were LED fixtures. The total consumption of electricity by the Lights in Alingsås project over the past three years has decreased by 50 per cent, and the energy consumption this year can be compared to that required for the electric heating for three apartments or one small house.
Overall, 4700 meters of cable were used, 700 meters of which was used in the church gardens.
The old museum building in the town centre, Alströmerska Magasinet, served as the starting point for the 257 guided tours that were offered during the five weeks. Approximately 6 500 people went on a guided tour. The total number of visitors to Lights in Alingsås 2010 was 65,000.
